GB3: 8 Week Advanced Glassblowing

Technique: Goblet Techniques.

Students will advance their glassblowing skills by learning and applying goblet-making techniques to their practice. The goblet will be broken down into its core components—cup, stem, and foot—with dedicated drills and practice time for each part. These components will then serve as building blocks for a culminating project: a raised cake stand or bell jar for displaying objects, showing how we can use these new skills creatively.

Class time will prioritize practice time with brief, focused demonstrations and targeted drills to help students progress quickly.  Through repetition, students will build fluency, confidence, and a more flexible approach to working with glass.

Session 1 – Course overview, and bit demonstrations. We’ll be practicing different kinds of fancy bits, looking at different types of bit preparations and applications.
Session 2 – Starting from the top of the form, we’ll be working through the finer points of cup making, focusing on pull cups, striving for thinner, lighter forms.
Session 3 – In session 3, we will begin our class project –  a cake plate with a bell jar – We’ll do a short demo, practicing avolios and making the domes for our pastry stands.
Session 4 – Focusing on the stem, we will explore solid and blown stems, practicing by dropping stems onto bubbles.
Session 5 – Session 5 is all about the blown foot. We will begin with a demonstration, and guide students through the finer points of making the foot.
Session 6 – In session 6, we’ll continue our exploration of bitwork, practicing advanced techniques like chain bits.
Session 7 – After a demo of a cake plate, students will combine the techniques they’ve learned into a cake plate design. An emphasis will be placed on sizing the plate to the cover properly.
Session 8 – Session 8 will be mainly work time, with targeted demonstrations as needed.

Each class is 3 hours long and meets once a week for 8 consecutive weeks. Wednesdays, 6pm – 9pm.
