
Welcome to the world of flameworking!
This course covers the basic fundamental techniques for melting and forming borosilicate glass with oxygen/propane torch. Demonstrations combined with student work time and individual student-teacher instruction will make up the core curriculum.
Course Goals and Objectives: Developing an introductory level of technical proficiency with flameworked borosilicate glass; Learning flameworked glass vocabulary; Understanding safe and courteous operating procedures in the glass studio; Cultivating a stronger vision for your continuing artistic pursuits.
Anticipated Lesson Course Schedule (subject to change):
Session 1 – Course overview: shop safety & basics of manipulating borosilicate glass at the torch, torch setup & flame chemistry, working with small rods, regions of the flame, cutting rod, gathering, punty and termination.
Session 2 – Seals, Loops & Chains: Structures and seals, hot seal verse cold seal, bending solid rods, repetition.
Session 3 – Attachments, Planning, & Rod construction: Glass flowers. Creating forms using intentional design. Shaping points, twists, and flattening gathers. Proper project planning/order of operations. Introduction to colored frit.
Session 4 – Free Work & Refinement: Come to class with a sketched idea or finish a project from previous classes. One-on-one troubleshooting. Learning when to stop.
Session 5 – Networking, Bridging & Sculpting: Cubes, teardrops, simple sculptural shapes. Bridging forms without collapse. Using gravity vs tools. Understanding heat zones in thicker glass & heat management across multiple connection points.
Session 6 – Color I: Stringers and Color Rules: Stringer pulling and application. Basic color compatibility rules. Transparency vs. opacity. Implosions.
Session 7 – Color II: Colored rods, Implosions, Encasing: Color overlays, dot stacking, mushroom implosions, patterned stringer work.
Session 8 – Final Session – Student’s choice! Deepening our color technique? Hollow intro? We will decide as a class what we want to spend our last day learning.
Each class is 3 hours long and meets once a week for 8 consecutive weeks. Thursdays, 6pm – 9pm.
Free Open Studio Days are also included in your registration. After 12 hours of instruction time (and with teacher approval) through the end of the course, students can book a three hour time slot in the studio once a week to work on class projects or additional pieces.
