
In this course, students will build on the foundational techniques introduced in SGB1, advancing to more complex assemblies and glass tubing forms. Using a hand torch, students will develop proficiency in creating single- and double-stick side seals, assembling braces, and making ring seals, while continuing to refine essential bench skills such as straight seals, bends, bubble blowing, and hand-wound coils. Along with mastering these techniques, students will gain a deeper understanding of the function and design of laboratory glassware, learning not only how to fabricate each piece but also how it is used in scientific applications.
Each class meets once a week for 3 hours over 8 consecutive weeks.
Students will have creative freedom to pursue projects of their interest during the course, but
labware demonstrations will include:
Weeks 1 and 2: Kaliapparat (Straight seals, blowing bubbles, and complex bends)
Week 3: Splash adapter (Blowing bubbles, straight seals, and ring seals)
Weeks 4 and 5: Dual Line Vacuum Manifold (Straight seals, making braces, and Double stick
side seals)
Weeks 6 and 7: Coil Condenser (Winding coils without a mandrel, straight seals, and ring seals
through the side of a tube)
Week 8: Work time and demos based on student interest
Free Open Studio Days are included in your registration. Throughout the duration of the course and with teacher approval, students can book a three hour time slot in the studio once a week to work on class projects or additional pieces.
