SGB1: Imaginative Scientific Glassware

Scientific glassblowing refers to the process of manipulating glass with a torch to create custom labware for scientific research. A scientific glassblower is a master of conceptualizing how the geometries of vessels, valves, fittings, filters, and joints affect the desired function of an object, considering the interaction that a researcher (or instrument) will have with the apparatus.

In this 4-week course, students will learn fundamental techniques of scientific glassblowing that can be translated to all styles of flameworking. Students will learn skills including creating round bottoms, straight seals, side seals, and bubbles to assemble glass tubing into complex forms. By the end of the course, students will leave with a custom glass trap.

Each class is 3 hours long and meets once a week for 4 consecutive weeks.

Sundays: April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th, and May 17th, 11am – 2pm.
