Prerequisite: GB3: Advanced Glassblowing or equivalent glassblowing experience.
In this 4-week course, students will develop their technique through the tradition of the cane pull. The course surveys a range of cane methods, from traditional techniques to experimental approaches.
Students will practice pulling straight cane and progress to more advanced techniques including twisted cane, filigrana, ballotini, and zanfirico. Instruction will also cover efficient color use and both traditional and advanced cane pickups. The focus of the course will be on the fundamentals of cane pulling, from working with the garage to stuff cups and pattern development, while looking to other artist’s practices for inspiration. Students should expect to leave the class with a stockpile of cane for future use, a wide understanding of cane and color techniques, and several finished pieces of their own design.
All students are required to purchase their own color bar for this class.
Suggested colors include:
- one transparent color
- one opaque color
- one duro (stiff) color (full list of suitable colors available on request)
Once registered, links for purchasing color bar will be emailed.
